Interview with the Owner, Janet Kapa

An Interview with the owner of Brooklyn Bridal & Prom, Janet Kapa

Question: How long has you shop been here and how did you get started?
Janet: I have been a wedding planner for about 15 years now.  In the beginning, I was strictly a wedding planner and coordinator for brides and grooms.  As I was planning my own wedding in 2005 I had trouble finding consistent and reliable customer service at our local bridal shops.  Therefore, after a few years of marital bliss, I decided to utilize my experience and resources in the wedding planning business.  With the support from my family and friends I opened Brooklyn Bridal & Prom, a full service formal wear boutique so that every customer can enjoy a memorable and fun shopping experience.

Question:  We love the designers you carry but what makes you different than the other shops who carry them?
Janet:  As a professional consultant, it is our job to get to know you.  We want to learn about you and your needs.  You are important to us.  If all you need is a dress then we can help you find the best style, color, and fit for your personality.  But, we’re not here to just sell you a dress.  We want you to LOVE the entire process.  We do a lot of hand-holding for our brides. So, if you need more attention and have a lot of questions then we are here to answer them.  If we do not have the product you are looking for we will make every effort to find it for you or point you in the right direction.

Question:  Am I going to be able to afford your dresses or your services?
Janet:  Yes, we make it a point to be affordable!  We work with all budgets.  We cater to women who have the highest expectations and that includes conscientious shoppers.  You can purchase a new designer gown with the assistance of your consultant (this will ensure you get the proper size) or you can take advantage of one of our retired styles and purchase off-the-rack.  Either way, your gown will need altering to ensure you are getting the most beautiful fit!  If you purchase your gown from us we have a seamstress who can help you here in our boutique.

Question:  How do I know of you can help me?
Janet:  If you are the kind of person who values our expert opinion and wants honest feedback from a reliable consultant then you will benefit from shopping with us.  We are in the business to make you look and feel beautiful.  We will not let you purchase something ridiculous.  You want to look back at your pictures years from now and think, “I really loved that dress”.  We don’t sell junk.  We don’t sell “cheap” made products.  You want a gown that is beautiful, fits great, and is high quality.  You will get a lot for your hard-earned money.
If you are the type of person who is simply looking for the best deal regardless of level of service then this is not the shop for you.  We will ask you thought provoking questions in order to realize the gown you need to fit your taste and personality.  If you don’t like to make conversation and are a closed-minded person you will not benefit from our level of service.

Question:  My schedule is so hectic!  Why do I have to make an appointment?  Can’t I just browse and then come back later if I like what I see?
Janet:  While we don’t like to turn away walk-ins, we need to warn you that if you drop by unannounced, there are two potential problems.  1. We may be with an appointment and we cannot pull ourselves away to answer your questions and/or 2. We cannot share with you all the inventory because it is not all on the showroom floor at all times.  Due to our quaint, limited space, we have decided to schedule everyone by appointment.  Each customer is assigned a private consultant to work with.  When you make your appointment you are to be the only person who gets our attention.  No phone calls, no interruptions, no competing for our help because we only work with one appointment at a time.  If someone comes in unannounced during your appointment we kindly ask them to schedule their visit for a later time.

Question:  Do you take credit cards or offer payment plans?
Janet:  Yes, we do take major credit cards; MasterCard, Visa, and Discover.  If you would rather make payments we can make a special schedule for you so that the shipping of your gown is not at risk.  Since most bridal gowns take on average six months to receive and alter for you, we recommend beginning to shop 9 - 12 months ahead of your wedding date.  Even some prom dresses can take weeks to get in.  Shop early.  When you find something you love, act on it.

Question: Okay, this sounds just like what I am looking for.  What’s the next step?
Janet:  Make an Appointment.  Let’s start from the beginning.  We can put our minds together and come up with a plan.  If you’re not sure what to do or where to start, we will ask you some simple questions to get us started.  You can expect us all to work hard for you.

Question:  I have some more questions.  Can I contact you?
Janet:  Yes, always!  Call us anytime you have a question: 517-592-8882.  We are always here to answer your questions.  Leave us a message if we don’t answer.  We always call our customers back!  You can also email the shop anytime: info@brooklynbridalprom.com

Timing is Everything

During the wedding dress shopping experience one of the most common questions that comes up is, "When should I order my wedding dress?"  The short answer is, "When you find one you love!"

Not every bride is so lucky to find her Perfect Gown on her first visit.  In fact, there are some brides who struggle with what to purchase.  This is, after all, for most brides: an investment of a lifetime.  The wedding dress has got to be Perfect!

First of all, as with everything else in life, Timing is Everything.  Here's a few tips to help you gear up for your bridal appointment:
Demetrios Bride at Brooklyn Bridal

1. Get Pretty.  That's right.  Before you head to your bridal appointment: take a shower, style your hair, and put your make up on.  We both know, we feel best when we look our best.  You are not going to feel pretty in any dress if you do not feel pretty to begin with.  So, get pretty!

2. Put the Good Panties on!  Please and thank you.  We won't judge, but really, we do not want to see your bare-naked buns!  Please wear nice underwear because we will be assisting you in the dressing room.  In our full service boutique, we do all the zipping, lacing, and bustling for you.

3. There's No Pressure.  If you do not feel like trying wedding dresses on, then don't.  Sometimes, we just don't feel like dressing up.  And that's okay!  We simply ask that you call and reschedule your visit.  We want to meet with you on a day you feel like you've put your best foot forward.

4. Have a Vision.  Although you may not know what style works best for you, you must have an idea of how your wedding will look and feel.  The season, the setting, the decorations, the colors, the flowers...all these items play a part in the wedding dress selection.  When you bring us your wedding vision, we will help you select the Perfect Bridal Gown for your Big Day!

Wherever you go, however many wedding dresses you try on, you must be in love with your gown.  That's the "AHHH" feeling!  That epiphany "this is the one" that people talk about.  When you find a wedding dress you love, act on it.  Sure, there's always going to be more dresses.  They make dresses everyday.  But, for you - when you fall IN LOVE with your wedding dress - don't chance it.  It could be gone next week.  If you LOVE it, then get it.

We recommend beginning your dress shopping 9-12 months before your wedding date.

We know how to put you in a bridal gown you're going to LOVE!  Contact Brooklyn Bridal & Prom for your personal bridal appointment.  Call 517.592.8882 or Schedule Online Today!

Who Gives Wedding Toasts?

Personalized Toasting Flutes

Best Man

At some weddings, he's the only one to give a little speech honoring the bride and groom. Often, his toast will veer toward the side of roast, as he pokes a little fun at his best friend.

Maid of Honor

Like the best man, the maid of honor can be called upon to deliver a short speech to honor the newlyweds. In some instances, this speech may be given at the rehearsal dinner instead.

Father of the Bride

Often, if there's more than one toast, the father of the bride (as the traditional host of the event) may welcome guests to the wedding, welcome the groom into his family, and talk about his love for his daughter.

Bride and/or Groom

The bride and groom may decide to raise a glass to their guests and to each other. If one member of the couple does decide to give a toast, the other should speak as well.

5 Reasons Not to Shop Online for Wedding Dresses

Online shoppers BEWARE!  Here's what we have learned about online bridal stores:

A lot of online bridal stores use original designer wedding gown photos and reduce the price dramatically in hopes of persuading online shoppers that they’re getting a huge deal on designer dresses.  Here is the REAL DEAL: Designers DO NOT support online bridal stores or their policies (unless the online bridal store has a physical bridal boutique as well).  This is because most of the online bridal stores are selling replica designer gowns - FAKES.

Top 5 Reasons NOT to shop online for a wedding dress:

Problem #1.  Online stores are using the designers’ original photos to promote their products and mislead the online shopper.  You do not get what you see - and there are no laws to protect the consumer.

Problem #2.  The online dress bead work is unattractive, the fabric is not the same, the pattern is poorly constructed, and the label is a fake.  The quality is simply inferior to the designer's original.  (Not to mention how upsetting pirating is to an accomplished designer!)

Problem #3.  The online dress you had "made to order" does not fit.  The size chart recommendation is not accurate.

Problem #4.  The online dress will cost you more in alterations.  Most professional seamstresses will not alter poorly made online designer replicas.  Now you're forced to use someone who's not an expert and it will cost you more in the long run.

Problem #5.  Even if you are satisfied with your "knock-off" gown, you will still need to have it cared for upon it's arrival.  It will need to be steamed, pressed, or ironed.  This also can cost you more money.

If those reasons don't dissuade you from supporting online piracy and gross replicas, then maybe this video clip will.
